Vintage vehicles add pizzazz to 28th Street

WYOMING -- Sitting roadside under a canopy in front of the new Klingman's store, Rose Bruins was content to be a looker. She arrived from Holland with her husband in a 2000 Corvette, and they enjoyed seeing what else rolled through town.
"We're just loving cars," the 63-year-old newlywed said Saturday during the 28th Street Metro Cruise. "They're just so beautiful. What a lot of money on 28th Street today."
A big supply of vintage vehicles was on hand for the fourth annual event stretching the length of 28th Street, from Grandville east to Cascade Township. And it was matched by the desire of thousands of people to see them..............
"The turnout from the seller standpoint was great," said Brian Silvernail, organizer of the auction run by Stanton-based Dealer's Choice Auto Auctions. "The economy is a part of it. Just like with houses, there's more sellers than there are buyers."
Stan Macomber got a high bid of $16,300 for his recreated 1930 Ford pickup, but that was not enough to strike a deal. The Cedar Springs man already was making plans to hawk the truck next month in Kalamazoo.
"It's a very specialized market, and the economy is not the greatest," said Macomber, 70, who hoped a sale would finance his work on a 1931 Model A pickup. "There's always tomorrow."
Aside from the auction, the cruise featured the original Batmobile at Klingman's and antique fire trucks at Centerpointe Mall. Studio 28 hosted an inaugural Community CruiseFest with food, games, a prayer tent and live music.
In the parking lot of Rogers Plaza Town Center, thousands of people browsed classic cars and trucks amid food vendors and live music....................
"Let's face it: Americans love their cars." Indeed, Jim Driscoll owns five of them after buying a 1974 Mercedes Benz 450SL convertible for $4,100 at the auction. "The price seemed great, so I bought it," the Belmont man said. "I came here to sell a couple cars and I ended up buying one. My wife's a little bit upset."
